My Stamp

Posted: Feb 4th, 2013

This past month I’ve been working on an art project with the Junior High School students. I made a stamp. The Japanese word for stamp is “hanko” but they also have a special word for handmade stamps: “tenkoku”

Mine says “harisu” which is how my name is pronounced in Japanese. The individual characters mean: to catch, prophet, and to celebrate.

In Japan a stamp is used in place of an individual’s signature.
